ConDor has a tradition of supporting the arts which include Dancing, a tradition we will continue with the Friday Night Regency Dance and the post Masquerade Dance on Saturday night.

Rock 'n' Roll Dance

Saturday Night's Rock 'n' Roll Dance follows the Masquerade and boasts a variety of music to match the eclectic tastes that ConDor crowds have always displayed. Be sure to let us know what music we should have on hand for you by emailing dances@condorcon.org.

Regency Dancing

Regency Dancing is the dancing that was done by the aristocrats of England during the period when King George III was unable to rule because of madness and the England was run by his son. The Prince was name Regent in 1811 and took the throne himself as George IV when his father died in 1820. However, culturally the Regency is considered to have run from the early 1790s until George IV's coronation. This is the period described in the works of Jane Austin. It is also the age of Napoleon and thus the period of the Hornblower and Sharpe novels.

There are two kinds of Regency dancing, line dances and the then-new waltz. The line dances are the ancestors to modern contra and square dancing. The waltzes, unlike most you have seen, are patterned and sometimes done in pairs of couples. The dances are mostly slow and stately, for the aristocracy never rushed or exerted themselves.

Regency dances have a long history at SF conventions. This started because of a group of fans and pros who in the 1960's became enamored of the Regency Period romance novels of Georgette Heyer. This evolved into teas and other events. Finally, a fan named John Hertz researched and recreated the dances of the period which began being held at Worldcons and other SF conventions, particularly on the West Coast. A fuller history can be found here (http://jophan.org/mimosa/m26/hertz.htm ). Quite apart of conventions, there are Regency dance societies, such as The Friends of the English Regency (http://www.geocities.com/~foter/) which hold balls and other Regency events.

ConDor has featured Regency dancing since its inception, usually hosted by Marty Massoglia or the less adept James Hay. All dances are taught before each is preformed. Given their repetitive nature, they are generally easy to learn, particularly as balls generally start with the more simple dances.

Costuming is not required but is highly encouraged.
