Don8 StuffToys

Don8 StuffToys is a Non-profit organization dedicated to collecting and distributing stuffed toys to children in need.  Since it’s creation in February 2002, I have collected and donated over 2500 stuffed toys and beanies to the San Diego Police Crisis Intervention, the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, UCSD Hillcrest Emergency Room and San Diego Children’s Court. As with past ConDor’s, Don8 StuffToys will be set up to accept donations and sponsorships of stuffies at the registration table.  Remember, your generosity will bring a smile to a child when it’s needed most.  For more information, contact Colleen Kelly Burks at don8_stuff_toys@yahoo.com

Used Cell Phone & PDA Drive for Fred Patten

Glen Wooten is running a collection of used cell phones & PDAs that folks are no longer using to raise a little something for Fred Patten, who was recently afflicted with a stroke. While they may just be taking space up in your desk drawer, they can be used to benefit Fred. Did you know that the phone you've used before might no longer be activated? It's true - you can find more information about the drive and what you would need to do if you'd like to contribute at the Fred Patten Cell Phone Drive - the collection box will be at the control desk in the art show. If you'll be coming to the convention and have older cell phones or PDAs just lying about , please keep the collection drive in mind (it helps Fred, it helps you, it helps the environment) - and thanks for your attention!

Condor at San Diego Sci-Fi Meetup

Pearl met with the San Diego group, and between bites of food sold a few memberships and got signups for volunteer duty (even BEFORE the convention)!

Party at LosCon

We had a wonderful time at the Condor Room Party at Loscon. I hear tell photos were taken and food was consumed. But so far the organizers are mum.

ConDor Goes to Conjecture

By Pearl Stickler

The ConDor Public Relations team made our presence known at the 2005 Conjecture in October. We had  a fan table right next to the entrance to the restrooms. Late Friday we were offered a table in another area, but  I told them I was quite happy with where we were: just about everyone passed by that area multiple times during the weekend. I think it was a factor in our selling 11 memberships (a Conjecture record), 2 T-shirts, and a mug. We also had flyers available for Timeless Dimensions, a Vancouver conventions, and Dragon's Lair, a novel by Lisa Guilfoil. For a while on Saturday, Richard Rowell wandered the hotel wearing a room party sign on his back. He got a lot of attention.

Saturday night we threw what was,  for us,  a typical room party. The theme was “To Serve Fan,” based on a “Twilight Zone” episode. People were invited to Cooking 101, a seminar from the Kanamit School of Culinary Arts.

There was a table,  set with fine china and crystal. Served on this elegant setting were hearts, livers, and brains garnished with parsley and drizzled with chocolate sauce. The soup bowl was filled with eyeball s. Bottles of Vulcan and Bajoran wines stood ready to pour . The edible body parts were small, but very realistic: we offered chocolate body parts, eyeball chewing gum, jello brains, hands, and a  skeleton. Most popular,  though, were the meat balls.

The drinks tub was filled with unusual drinks : there were a variety sodas sold as “Old Time Sodas,” juice, chocolate milk, Frappacino, and  iced tea, as well as the usual Coke, and Pepsi. The unusual party drinks were very popular, with lots of Coke and Pepsi left over.

There were “To Serve Fan” cookbooks on display, and Colleen made temporary school ID badges. At some point during the evening an attendee commented that the  ID badges kept you off the menu, and it became a very popular comment. Pearl  stood at the door wearing an apron and a chef’s hat greeting all our attendees, who all got a ConDor sticker for their badge.

Attendance at the party was about 125 people. With Convention membership at  about 240 , I’d say we got a pretty good turn out. And people kept coming back after their first visit. We rocked.

I’d like to thank Randy Burks, John  Fedelchak, and Richard Rowell for their assistance with the fan table. And a very special thank you to Colleen Kelly Burks for plotting, planning, and executing the entire weekend with me

Website Redesign

This year, ConDor was selected to receive a very special donation: a brand new, up-to-date, spiffy web site designed by Tony N. Todaro of Todaro Communications, Inc. (http://www.todarodesign.com)  Once a year they choose a non-profit organization to receive a professionally-designed web site for free and we were the fortunate recipient. We hope you enjoy it.
